Has anyone her considered upgrading to a dual turbo system? You could use a smaller turbo for the low RPM's and and large turbo for the higher RPM's. HKS makes great turbos and this would be a sweet setup. If anyone trys this please let me knoe, it would be awsome.

I have not seen anyone offering a setup. A lot of aftermarket is out, but so much is not done because it is a niche market, not everyone here wants to go all out.

Do any modern racecars even use that? Its expensive and I think its more likely they'd use two same sized turbos.
Anyway, the engine is mounted sideways with the turbo at the back, I don't think there's space to stick another turbo there.

I've seen alotof ppl do a twin turbo set up on other cars, all mostly aftermarket. It would be nice to see for the CX-7, give it true ZOOoooom! Or even a twin charger setup which is 1 supercharger and 1 turbo charger. you get a better power band with virtually 0 lag!

The Nissan Skyline GT-R comes with a stock twin turbo setup, and using two of the same sized turbos is an option but using a small to medium sized turbo for the low rpms and a large to medium large sized turo that would kick in at high rpms. Also the idea of a supergarger and a turbocharger is an awsome idea, VW had an engine setup like that and it was fetured on Wards engine list. You can't stick the turbos in the front?

Skylines use 2 turbos of the same size, not different sized ones like you were talking about. Stock each turbo had like 7 psi of boost, th cx-7's single turbo puts out 15 psi. Some BMWs have dual turbos as well.

The 1993 thru 1995 (in the US) RX-7 used a twin turbo set up that was diffeant sizes. The smaller turbo would spool from 1500 rpm to 4500 rpm..The Larger turbo would sit and spool up, but not come on line until 4000 rpm and stay on until 8000 rpm, the acceleration was seemless because of the over lap...The only probiblem I had with the stock system was that the ECU would cut boost between 17 and 18 lbs, and it cut it hard...

The BMW 335i uses dual turbos to eliminate lag. It adds a significant amount of plumbing complexity (eg, the FD RX-7's were a maze of vacuum lines). I doubt the aftermarket will ever do dual turbos for the DISI motor.

Dual Turbo systems are used for one reason, to maximize flow capacity while reducing turbo lag.

You can buy a huge turbo, but it will take a longer time to spool up to a point where it creates boost.

Two smaller turbos can provide the same total boost capacity but will spool up to boost quicker. Making it easier to drive.

This can be tuned by using turbos of differing size.

The main problem here is complexity of installation, reliability, and cost. Thus, I doubt that anyone will come up with one for our cars.

The new F350 turbo diesel uses 2 different sized turbos.

Well, I don't know much about the other cars, but the 93-96 RX-7 is a Sequential turbo setup. Like of the other member said, they do over lap.. however it much more than that.. there are actuators for it to work properly. So it's not a very easy setup... and that is why big HP RX7 goes with a single turbo unit.

for everyday driving it is great, but the involvment and computer management would be tedious to put together.

if you want big HP.. single unit is the way to go.

I am currently looking possibly finding a place to bend me some custom turbo manifold, because I still have a full ball bearing CART F1 turbo unit that's a GT38 shell with a TO4 exhaust flenge. But I only have the CX-7 for 4 days, so I have yet find time to get it lifted to see what room is available.

The new F350 turbo diesel uses 2 different sized turbos.
actually it's dual turbines on one exhaust housing....the turbo used now for the f series powerstroke is designed to eliminate the lag issue from the previous model.. it 's a greddy piece and specifically designed for diesel motors.. allthough it can be used on gasoline powered vehicles it would only be used on drag cars considering the fact they are are set and wastegated at 40 psi

I believe porsche introduced a dual-turbo system. Or is going to. Not sure which at this point.

The latest 911 (997) turbo has a single turbo with variable vane nozzles. It can spool quick like a small turbo but can also make big hp like a bigger turbo. The Cayenne turbo however is a twin turbo setup but it is really just like the CX7 just in double. There is a left and right turbo for each of the 4 cylinder banks of the V8. The BMW 335i is a true dual turbo system with one exhaust manifold and 2 turbos.
