...have put on about 500km since we picked up our new CX7 last weekend, and still smell a burning type smell after driving 15 min or so (I think it coming from the exhaust system). It is obviously more prevalent when in traffic or stopping, and when the heating system is on. I figured it was just "burn off" on the metal, but I am surprised to smell this after 500k. Anyone else had this experience?

mine went away after 500 miles. It's the catalyst coverter breaking in smell.

I've had the burning smell for 5800 miles and I've been to the dealer 4 times about it. Love the car, but I've contacted a lawyer to try and get resolution to the smell.

That burning smell is from Cosmoline. It is on the engine to protect it from rust. They also spray this on firearms to protect them from rust as well. This is normal and all modern vehicles have this sprayed on the engine area before shipment. Mazda smells to have sprayed a little bit more on the CX-7 than other vehicles I have owned.

Removal from rifle (don't try this on your cx-7!)

You can actually buy it on amazon.com

The dealer initially thought the smell was cosmoline, but if it's still smelling at 5,000 miles, it's defective. They replaced the shroud on the turbo thinking it was the cosmoline on there, but now they're on to replacing the alternator. I'm not a litigious person, but if this doesn't fix it (4th dealer visit), I'll expect some action from corporate.

Could be your catalytic converter? Or worse, there is some type of oil leak that is causing the smell. Damn, hope not. :(

So much for that "new car smell". I have just over 1200km after a week and a half of driving and the smell seems to be a bit better. Never experienced it this strong/bad before with any other new vehicles.
