View Full Version : heat under the bonnet!!

Hi all

finally (after 4 weeks of ownership) decided to spend some time looking under the bonnet after a good run in warm-ish weather.

My goodness it's hot under there! Even the wheelarches over the front wheels were warm! The bonnet itself wasn't hot, because of the insulation.

There doesn't seem to be any way for the built-up hot air to vent, so it just sits there and soaks into the bodywork. Perhaps this is what causes the AC system to be less effective??

Why couldn't they have put in some simple vents on the bonnet (maybe at the trailing edge) to let the hot air vent itself? Something like the Subaru WRXs have...

Has anyone done their own vents? Does it help?

On another and perhaps related note....I'm getting worried about the lack of AC effectiveness! It was only 22 C today and the AC wasn't exactly very cold, even with fan speed on med-high and the temp setting on 18c (which is the minimum here)

What happens when it's 35-40C outside???? :-(

cheers

the AC condenser is the front of the vehicle along with the radiator. So AC operation is not effected by underhood heat. All turbo vehicles have a lot of underhood heat. Turbochargers and exhaust manifolds get HOT. Vents would be good. My Evo comes with a factory hood vent. It is very effective at keeping underhood temps down.

We have been looking for a vented hood since we bought the CX-7. DG Motorsports put one on their SEMA Show car, but is not going to put it in production.

I just hope someone makes one soon..

I'm in Panama, the tropics, 100% humidity, 30-45 C during the day. AC works just fine. It's not the coldest, but it gets the job done. But I'm not sure if it is the same spec as your unit. My vehicle is a US/Canada spec.

We live in the SEMI-TROPICS... Louisiana, USA. Been in the high 90's and low 100's for the last four weeks, also with high humidity. My wife remarked yesterday that she was very pleased that the AC works as well as it does, particularly being near-black and sitting in direct sun all afternoon.

We have purchased the OEM windshield cover from Street Unit, and it helps keep the cabin cool in the sun (along with all around window tint). Just an idea, might help. I know SU has 1 in stock actually right now.

Hell just the 20% all-around tint I had put on last weekend worked wonders on keeping in-cabin heat down.

totally off topic with the window tinting posts

Is it?.........
