Took my buggy in for the 15,000 mile maintenance and had the dealer update the PCM in response to Service Bulletin 01-053/06 "Lack of power or hesitation on acceleration under 2,000 RPM".
I was pleasantly surprised to feel the difference - that turbo lag is almost gone! WOW! Love it! :D

Hi,
This is great ! May I know what is Service Bulletin 01-053/06 ? Where can I get this article for read. I have intended to do the same for my CX-7 except that my local Mazda dealer warned that I cannot go back to the old program once a new one is reflashed.
Is there a right time to update the PCM ? Can you do it before 15 000 miles ?
Thanks.

I will check with a friend of mine who is the master tech at the dealer I got my speed3 from. I know there was a reflash that fixed some hesitation, but it in turn killed fuel mileage. I wonder if this is an improved one.

Try this link to get those TSBs.

Guess there's no "right time". Just print out that TSB, bring it with you next time you have service, and request the update. I did mine at 16,331 miles.

The link posted above does not include the TSB on the PCM update. Edmunds lists 2.

Has your MPG been changed?? I don't want to destroy that!!!
I have 9200 miles on the clock and over the weekend we did some highway driving to the tune of 300.1 miles. When I got home I filled the tank with 12.839 gallons of Premium Shell and did the math. 23.27MPG!!! I tried to stay out of the Turbo as much as I could and was cruizin' @ 60MPH most of the time.
Back and forth to work I average @ 21MPG.

I don't pay attention to MPG. GASP! How can Vince say such a thing?
Easy. MPG has never been a concern. If I was worried/obsessed about MPG, I would have bought a different vehicle. In my mind, performance, styling, features are MUCH MORE IMPORTANT than MPG.
This has been a public service announcement. Opinions belong to the mod and no one else :D

Yes, you are correct in my opinion too.:D
HOWEVER, consider this my aristocratic friend.
Current local price of 93 octane = $2.70 (and will be higher with summer gas)
91 Octane is not available in my area.
Because we LOVE the CX-7 we probably drive more than the average person, lets say 15,000 per year.
$2.70 @ 15 mpg = $.18 per mile x 15K = $2,700 in gas.
$2.70 @ 20 mpg = $.135 per mile x 15K = $2,025 in gas.
What will $675 buy for your CX-7/yourself/significant other/child/parent/charity in the course of a year?

I'm not concerned to the level I wish I had bought a PRIUS.....................
BUT, since my CX7 is my daily driver and I average @ 20MPG, I AM concerned that I don't destroy what I have now.
If I WAS CONCERNED about fuel consumption.......I would have a RowBoat, BUT I have a YAMAHA 23' 320HP twin Jet SportBoat!
If I WAS CONCERNED about fuel consumption.......I would pull my RowBoat with a 4 cylinder standardshift mini Truck,
BUT I have a GMC Sierra Denali AWD/AWS 6.0L FullSize Pickup!!
AND if I was really concerned I wouldn't have a Mercedes Powered Chrysler Crossfire Roadster either!! Definately not as frugal as a MGA!!

By definition, a tree hugger CAN'T own a CX-7. Doesn't compute. Isn't authorized. :p

Dammit Im tired of people complaining about cheap Gas.
2.70 for premium is sooo cheap. Out here in Silicon Valley its freaking 3.50
Just kidding. I really dont mind trading some fuel economy for the flat spot. It was annoying

As I recall, because it was many service visits ago when my CX-7 was new, the ECU re-flash didn't affect my fuel mileage at all...it just got rid of the hesitation at very low RPM's. $2.70 for Premium 93 octane is from a long time ago, methinks. In SoCalifornia it ranges from $3.15 to $3.30 a gallon for brand name 91 Octane Premium gasoline. I've never seen 93 Octane gas in our fair state, and in fact don't think it exists here.
When we're traveling in the SouthWest through Arizona and New Mexico in October of this year, I guess I'll get the chance to try 93 octane, but until then it remains a myth for my CX-7.
The best remedy for sub-standard fuel mileage? Read the intake items that I installed on my CX-7, ie the ones in my signature...those increased fuel mileage from 16MPG in town and 20MPG on the freeway to 19MPG in town and at least 22MPG on the freeway. And that's pulling 22"'s with Kumho ECSTA STX 265x35x22" WR-rated tires, with a pretty hard 420-Tread Wear Rating. I think if I was still running the OEM wheels/tires I'd be getting more than 20MPG in town and 24MPG+ on the freeway--around here the freeway means going 75-85MPH as a normal practice.
However, like many here, I didn't buy the CX-7 for high MPG, even though I do tend to keep track of it pretty closely. That's just an old habit from owning Honda's after a lifetime of M-Benz and BMW automobiles. My CX-7 goes like the devil, and looks twice as nice as any other SUV I've ever seen.
Kindest regards,
