Some of the people in the comments.. wow. The review was done over the internet, which is obviously not the best way to review two cars.

Anyway, the audiophile system in the Edge is downright awful, I know from first hand experience. WORSE than the Bose for the CX-7.

I got to drive my mother-inlaws fully loaded Edge around for a week while we were evacuated with them during hurricane gustav, and I can honestly say I'm glad I bought the CX-7 over the Edge. The Edge is a very nice car, but the CX-7 is just so much more fun to drive.

An apples to oranges comparison. If they wanted to test apples to apples, they'd need to go after the Acura RDX. I'm tempted to test the RDX, just to see how it compares, but the price tag for one is gonna be almost $10k more than I can get a similarly equipped CX-7 for. The only advantage I can think of right now is the nearest Acura/Honda dealership is only a couple miles away instead of the 40 miles to the closest Mazda place.

Edge is yet another box on wheels - with rounded "edges".

I'm 6'2", but I still feel like I need to stand on tiptoes to see in the window! "Higher beltline"?!? ...just like Urkel, or your 9,000 year old uncle.

Can anyone say "blind spot"?

I luv'd the Edge commercials, driving around the edge of tall buildings etc. ...cause that's what it feels like pulling up next to anyone or anything, or even just parking. Push your face up to the window and make sure you're not 12 feet from the curb, or a family of little people... like looking over the edge of a canyon - hoping you don't fall in.

Compare the Edge to the CX-9. That way you're comparing the Ford to the Mazda they stole the technology from... ca-ching.

Does anyone know why you have to rotate the wheel 3 times over in the Edge before the thing starts to turn... is that normal?

...got kids? Take your Edge and stomp on the gas, they'll be asleep in 2 seconds flat.

If I have to pass yet another one of these pumpkins - because I can't even see the horizon around it - then I'm going to carve it.

Trick-or-Treat. :D ...zoom-zoom beaaaatches. ;)

Regarding comparing the Acura RDX to the CX-7 - I was just in this exact situation buying my CX-7 a few weeks ago. I was looking at a used RDX in great condition or a new CX-7. In my opinion the RDX has a nicer interior and had things such as bluetooth standard. They both felt very similar as far as driving with maybe the RDX picking up a little quicker.

But for the money the CX-7 is the better deal to me.

i got an edge while my cx-7 was in the shop. what a pieces of **** it was ford all the way. the outside is cool but the interior wow. the dashboard is made up from 20 pieces or so and the door is about 6 differnt pieces in itself.

Gotta wonder though, how much of the CX7 is shared with the Edge, since Mazda is shared with Ford

I was saying not much of anything is shared with the EDGE, the CX-9 which is actually based on the same platform as the EDGE (CX-7 is not), shares very little with the Ford, the transmissions are even completely different.

Aheeem... It's NOT. It's the other way around; Mazda Engineered, Ford stole from Mazda - same ol' story.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_B-Series

The Edge is the CX-9 (not the CX-7). Ford stole what they wanted and repackaged it as their own.

...although I wouldn't be surprised if Ford decides to rip the CX-7 at some point.

Well, Ford does own a good deal of Mazda to begin with. I know when I sat in the 6, I felt like I was sitting in a Fusion.

Yeah and Mazda is slowly peeling away from them, now they use Chase Bank instead of FoMoCo Credit, etc. They're starting to stand on their own.. they've even said they want to stray from Ford. The last 6 was inexcusably cheap feeling inside and small.

Ford has 33.4% of mazda now i think

I didn't think it felt that cheap inside. Though, I can't really say for sure what feels cheap to me. Some people say the interior of the Vibe is cheap, but the Matrix is nice, same car, different perception.
All in all, unless you're buying a Rolls Royce or Mercedes, or some other high end sports/luxury vehicle, it's mostly plastic on the inside anyways.

MAZOOM
10-05-2008, 07:56 AM
It's plastic but the grade of plastic is what matters, the door pocket was extremely flimsy, more so than the CX-7, to the point that where it felt like I could have snapped it off with little force. The same can be said for some of the softer plastics which felt very grimey after 20,000 miles of use.

The Fusion is a re-packaged 2002-2008 Mazda 6...take away the skin and you've got a Mazda 6. That's why the Fusion tends to be a fantastic deal. Mazda Quality and handling - with Ford deep discounts.

10-06-2008, 03:09 PM
yea but the Fusion is WAY WAY WAY more boring on the inside

I was looking at one right before I got the CX7 but they just couldnt give me a good enough deal on it. Not for that car...glad I didnt get it

Whatever

I drove almost every vehicle in this segment and my wife and I ended up with the CX-7. Granted we were looking mainly at base model's because we didn't want to drop a ton of money on a vehicle right now and leather and huge sunroofs aren't that big of a deal.

Anyway, the base model Edge felt incredibly cheap. Plastic was everywhere, and cheap looking plastic at that. The driving experience was numb and the transmission shifted rather odd as well. If you got on it hard and then let off the gas the rpms would hold awhile before it shifted and the rpms dropped back down.

We drove a RDX just for the fun of it and as much as I love the CX-7 it beats it hands down. Engine is very smooth, no lag whatsoever, and the interior is incredible. The one we drove had the technology package with voice activated navigation. I think the RDX is a bit smaller than the CX-7 which may have helped it with handling. A better matchup for the RDX is probalbly a loaded out VW Tiguan.

Well, I believe that, unless you're driving a Mercedes or Rolls Royce, you're gonna have plastic in your car no matter what.

Well comparing a $36,000 car with a $23,000 car hmmm..

Of course IMO the Acrua and Lexus both are Frugly cars.

Man what could you have done to a CX7 with $14,000 in mods.

Since I take my mods off before dealer trips I really notice the change when I do and even more afterward once they are back on.

I have a more mods planned as budgeting allows over the next few years.

While some other cars have a few features I see and think that would be nice. When I factor in cost of purchase and insurance the value is just not there. Cars costing 1 1/2 times are just not 1 1/2 times more car.

I've been in several RDX's because my old Volvo dealer was RIGHT next door, and I wasn't impressed with the interior, for 37K it shouldn't have such clutter and hard plastic. The door handles we're especially cheap feeling. Besides the fact that the RDX looks sooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad, the engine was nice and I did detect turbo lag.

...going back to the vs. EDGE discussion, I've been in a rental EDGE for 4 days now, a fully loaded 08 model (I think), complete with the color-changing LEDs, auto-closing and opening liftgate, and chrome-outlined air conditioning vents (no chrome door handles, though).

The interior is white, along with leather upholstery, but aside from the aesthetics, the throttle response seems more reactive than the 7, but I don't know if that's because the EDGE doesn't have an ECU or just better response. However acceleration felt VERY slow, painfully slow, compared to my 7 back at home, it felt like the car was pulling a lot of weight, probably due to the lack of low-end boost.

So I guess in conclusion, aside from the useless gimmicks (color changing LEDs? what people do to sell cars these days...), the CX-7 is A LOT more fun to drive, and looks a lot better and more modern, with more curved surfaces inside and out compared to the trademark-Ford-square-boxiness.

Ahh makes sense now. :D Turbos are cooler, the Edge can keep it's V6. It's kinda sad, because the Edge even with the V6 still feels so much slower than the CX-7. I agree with MAZOOM, no turbo means no lag so whatever power it has is available now - hence  you feel a better throttle response.

Monotonous, eventhough one possesses the car of one's choice, over a period of time, one starts to like other cars, but one who likes the car not only for the looks but for its various aspects is happpy with it in the long run.

Alpha Wolf

The Edge is on the CX9 type chassis.

Its normally aspirated V6 will have better initial response it is a bigger engine with out a turbo to spool up.

While a nice car, it is again more of a lux box than sports car.

Since my car has been in the shop over 2 weeks now, ive been in an 08 Eddie Bauer Explorer, although not an Edge, its not a terrible car. But the one key thing we would all agree on is, Ford's in general are soulless. Its comfy inside, but there is such a lack of "driving experience" associated with this car. I can't wait to get my CX-7 back!!!
