View Full Version : Trade in for New Camaro or Corvette

Guys,

I am so in love with the new Vette that I almost can't stand looking at the CX-7 anymore. The new Camaro also has me all tickled up and sooner or later I will trade the 7 for one of these two. The fact is that's where my heart has always been.
The 7 has been a pretty good car and I really can't complaint much. Mine gets superb gas mileage, something I will miss. Unless gas prices skyrocket through the roof, I will likely be back behind the wheel of a 6.2L V-8 with a 6-speed manual tranny.

You can afford the new Vette? Why not compromise, get the Camaro & keep the CX-7.

Cannot even put the two in the same class, personally. A Vette is a Vette.

I'm not sure how one can compare going from a $30k CX-7 to vette that costs 3 times as much... A vette...

I would personally want to try Nissan's new GT-R first though :)

I envy you people who can pick a car you like :) I don't mean money-wise. I mean fit-wise. At 6'5" I am severely limited in my choices in CX-7's price range. The 7 is much more of a nice compromise to me than the car of my dreams.

im all about the new Challenger. THATS a beautiful car. but im on the road to paying off the 7 and dont want anymore car payments for a few years. but damn that challenger looks good...

i saw a white GTR this weekend. that thing is sweet. if i had the means, that would be the car i got next (unless i could afford an audi r8).

Rick - the vette gets better mileage than a CX7. 26+ mpg on the hwy. I buddy of mine picked up an new 08 closeout Vette with the basic LT1 package for 39K (10K off sticker). I wouldn't get a Camaro in the 1st model year - it will have bugs and there will be price gouging to start.

Shadow,

Couldn't agree more. A Vette is a Vette. The main problem I have with the Camaro is its weigh....the SS 6-speed manual will weigh over 3800 lbs. The Corvette weighs 600lbs less (~3200) and of course, MPGs will be better with the Vette. They both share the same engine....the LS-3, which is rated at over 425 HP.

Also, I don't make a whole lot of money, but with current discounts, a new Vette base model 1LT with the LS-3 engine and 6 manual can be had for around $40k. Couple that with the equity I have on my CX-7 and about $2k down payment, and the Vette will cost me about $32-33K plus TTL.

I am carrying a lot of equity from my old 2002 Camaro which I traded for the 7. The 7 had a sticker price of $21800 plus ~$6300 equity in my trade in. All said and done with extended warranty and what not, I had a final balance of just over $17k for my 7. I bought it in October 06 and owe $6200 on it. I have just over a year left on it (November 09)

I'm going to wait a bit and possibly get a used 08 Vette or a new one with good incentives. We'll see!

EDIT: Shadow, from what I've read, GM is going to be ready to flood the market with new Camaros. There should be no gouging, but then again, one never knows.

A CX-7 GT can be just as much as a new base Vette with discounts. Your numbers are way way high.

Kristen,

Have you seen a Corvette up close? They are NICE!

Corvettes are nice, as long as you don't need a back seat. You can get really good pricing right now on any GM, as they are doing employee pricing again.

I actually do prefer the Camaro, but the interior in that thing is not really up to snuff. I agree that you shouldn't buy that first year out, since it's a completely new design though.

Just a thought; have you looked at the new G8 GT? If I were to trade my CX-7 today, it would probably be to get that car. Good luck either way!

While I like the vette, camaro and challenger my needs dictate I go in another direction. Plus the CX is paid off... A real plus..

So I will just have to drool at the Vettes, Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers.

Have you ever driven one at speed??

I have from the 60s stingrays to the previous version. Very nice to drive. My ***** is that I am too tall and my head hits the roof...

You should drive one first...

It might be eye opening...

Very fun..

I have two friends that have 06 and an 07 vette but they will not let me test drive them! They know me too well.. :D

They drive them around like little old ladies. I would be surprised if either one has floored either car yet...

The 08 C6 Vette is nice. So easy to drive fast. It doesn't even feel fast. Intake, exhaust, ECU tune, rear diff gears, and you have an 11 sec ride. If you bolt on a Procharger, you have 550+ hp that will trounce a Z06 for a lot less money.

Though I have never been privy to being an owner of a muscle car, I grew up with a dad that was. These beautiful machines bring back nostalgic memories of a time when a muscle car was a big hulking piece of American made metal, horsepower and thundering exhaust notes. Although they are somewhat on the heavy side, I am glad to see that the American car manufacturers are bringing back that feeling of cruising on an open road in a machine that has the look and feel of a muscle car in its truest form. Technology has also improved handling significantly. So I believe that even though the weight is kinda high, they will still perform as advertised and give everyone a run for their money. Here are some quick specs:
Camaro SS:
422hp 6.2l v8
0-60 4.8
3913lbs
23hwy
around $28,000

Challenger SRT8:
425hp 6.1 Hemi V8
0-60 4.9
4140lbs
23hwy
Around $38,000
Side note: Steve Saleen and his new company SMS announced their Signature Series, starting with the 570TM and 570XTM Challenger. The street-legal cars will be based on the 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T and will feature a supercharged 5.7L Hemi with power ratings of 500 and over 700 horsepower, respectively. Each will be signed by Steve Saleen.

And also, neither car will be manufactured in the states. Camaro Australia, Challenger Canada. STILL, beautiful muscle cars… as is the Vette’… just different price class.

How about 2008 Mitsubishi Evo X GSR?
295 hp 2.0L turbo 4 AWD
0-60 4.6
3558 lbs
22 mpg hwy
base price $33615

So, let me get this straight. You owed money on the Camaro you traded in for the CX-7? The CX-7 isn't paid off yet and you want to trade into a new Vette or Camaro? Unless your vehicle is paid for, don't go deeper into debt. Just because you aren't upside down on your car doesn't mean you should trade it in. You do realize that you're still gonna have to pay off that current loan somehow.

No no no, it's the opposite, the Camaro was paid off and the 6K it was worth went towards the CX-7 he got for around 21K(subtract 6K and you have the loan amount), and hes paying the CX-7 entirely off in a year or so.

The GSR can be had with some nice discounts.

My Drag Car SST Eliminator was a 1964 GTO. 10.55/131mph 1/4 mile

My Brother had a 1968 GTO 12.40/117mph 1/4 mile

My Brother in Law had a 1966 GTO. 11.40/123 mph 1/4 mile

So my nostalgia would be a GTO. And while the new GTO is a nice car. It just is not a GTO in the sense that would mean anything to me... It just does not look like any real GTO.

The new Mustangs, Challenger and Camaros do look like the ones I grew up with an drove. This is the main problem I have with the new Charger. A 4 door car a Charger and it looks nothing like any of the original Chargers.

But since I have a 2 kids one 6' tall I do not see a 2 plus 2 pony car in my future. My Hurst Trans Am went away when my son was born because the wife could not deal with putting a child seat in back.

As I would not be racing them. Just good as the old cars performance 13's or 14's in 1/4 mile would be okay..

so the last SS camaro...with 100 less horsepower...is only .1 second slower to 60????

that thang is too heavy dammit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

fortunately i got to drive the 35th anniversary SS with my stepdad who owned an Iroc-Z...it was such an amazing car...it was ridiculous

but i would take a base c5 or c6 over a camaro any day...at this particular point in my life...im considering trying to get a C5 for my next car if i dont keep the cx7...i just dunno...i like the Hyundai Genesis Coupe as well

The Hyundai Genesis coupe looks to be an awesome car. The tuner version will be the base model with the turbo 4 rather than the V6 model.

09-17-2008, 02:41 AM
thats what im sayin...id rather have the turbo 4 anyway...low end torque is AMAZING...i swear...now that ive gone forced induction...i really dont see myself looking back

I would place a healthy bet that intake/exhaust/bov/intercooler would get you the same horsepower as the V6 if not more...and im sure with better gas mileage...and less weight...and more fun

Guys,

It's done! I just purchased a brand spanking new 2009 Corvette 1LT

Here are some pics of the ride taken with my cell phone:

Inside the showroom floor....all nothing but Vettes!
http://www.mcx7.com/picture.php?albumid=12&pictureid=48

Here are some of the numbers:

MSRP: $47,889
Sale Price: $42,268 (employee discount, military discount)

Owed on the Mazda CX-7: $6200
Trade in value paid by dealer: $13,400

Price for new Corvette, out the door MINUS TTL (~$21-2200): $35,100

When I traded the Camaro for the CX-7, I had an equity of $7300 into the car. When I traded the CX-7, I had an equity of ~$7150

Back to the Vette; it is the base 1LT, coupe with the standard suspension, LS3 6.2L 430HP engine and 6-speed manual. Its curb weight should be nore more than 3200lbs.
It is Victory Red (although it looks wine red in the phone pics) with black interior. It has more bells and whistles than I care for. One year On-star included.

A few observations I've made so far:

- The car is VERY driveable and comfortable. It is actually nice to drive everyday, unlike previous generations, including the C5. The base suspension works out best for everyday use...this is according to more seasoned owners.

- Exterior looks are KILLER! You really have to look at this car up close. It looks very much like a Ferrari....no joke. The paint is VERY glossy...it probably has 2 coats or more of clearcoat.
My only complaints so far are that the body gaps could be a bit tighter (like the CX-7 was) and the mirrors seem to be placed too far back. They seem a bit out of place. Look at the side shot I posted and see what I mean.

- Interior is well laid out. Gauge cluster sight is outstanding, unlike my old Camaro, which was beyond horrible. It has a Driver Information Center which gives you everything from coolant/oil temperature to instant fuel economy. The latter is very handy for adjusting driving habits for better MPGs. The power steering is speed sensitive, so it's very soft while parking and rock solid at speeds. The shifter is perfectly located and buttery smooth and the clutch is actually very light. The seats have awesome lateral support, the center console is slighty tilted towards the driver for better reach/visibility and you are nice and secured in the cabin, so you almost feel part of the machine. Trunk space is HUGE.....unlike any other modern sports car I've ever seen! Can't put this any other way.
The main complaints are with the door buttons, as you have to reach back a bit to get access to them. Also, the AC controls are right behind the shifter, so it a bit tricky getting to them.....not too bad though. The AC seems to reset back to outside air most times....versus staying in recycle mode. Lastly, because of the "reverse mohawk" roof, view out the back with the rearview mirror is obstructed somewhat.

Some side notes, wind noise in the front is non-existent. You do hear the wind out back a tiny bit. So far, I've driven ~150 miles and I'm still at over half tank. This is an 18 gallon tank. The cat back seems to be dual all the way, with nice 2 1/2" madrel bent pipes. With headers, better flowing mufflers, intake, 4.10 gears, a tune.....and I'll be strapped to a death machine.
Also, I half-way dropped the hammer in second gear at about 30 mph....left a 15 ft skid mark out back.

More updates,

The were resurfacing the road around my house and I got a few tar spots on my car. That gave me the perfect excuse to give the Vette it's first wash and wax. It looks very nice. My wife and I took a ride with the top off.....absolutely awesome. I have never been this much in love with a car.

Sorry Alpha....I'm not trying to be evil.....I'm just having a great time with my new baby. Wish more of you could join me.

the restyling is derived from the dodge viper, not the ferrari. viper has been stealin' sales from the vette so made it more agressive ala viper. don't think they went far enough imho, viper still has it on looks but you can't beat the vettes price like you said.

Monotonous ONE
09-22-2008, 03:02 PM
also...sure the viper has 600 horses...but it if you pocketed the 40-60 grand over the viper...you could put less than 10 of it into the motor and get well over that...as well as better comfort and driveability

but then again you could say you had a viper
