I was wondering that the other day, I like the stock rims but I like more the CX-9 20" rims.
CX-7 235/60 18"
CX-9 245/50 20"
Miata.net tire calculator shows that the CX-9 wheel/tires are only 1/2" inch taller than the stock CX-7 tire. not to much difference.
Here is a photoshop of the rims of how they would look like.

Very nice.....I've been thinking about this too. Well in height it won't matter as long as they have the same bolt battern which i believe they do. The cx-7 is a 5x114.

The height is as important as the bolt pattern, your original overall wheels diameter is 29,1 inch and you cant modify your diameter for more than 3%. If you want to calculate it just go to there http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp and enter the original size and the size you wish to change to.

just in case anyone wanted know, you can calculate wheel/tire height by hand(as long as you can convert mm/in or in/mm). The conversion factor is inches x 25.4=mm or mm x .03937(1/25.4)= inches. With that in mind, on a 245/45/17 for example, just multiply the section width, 245, by the aspect ratio, 45. In your calculations multiply by .45 not 45 because the 45 means the tire is 45% as tall as it is wide. So the 45 is a percentage. This gives you the height of one sidewall in mm. Then convert that to inches(because your rim size is in inches). 245x.45x.03937=4.3405425 Since you have two sidewalls you need to multiply that by 2, so 4.3405425x2=8.681085. That is height of both of your sidewalls in inches, so all you have to do is add in the rim height, 8.681085+17=25.68. This is a calculated number, actual height can vary from one brand to another of the same size. One way to check the actual height is go to the manufacturer's website or tirerack and look for the rollout. That is how far the tire rolls in one revolution, so the more roll out a tire has the taller it is. Hope that helps someone in the future.

When I bought my CX-7 (about 3 months ago), I asked the dealer to switch the CX-7 20" wheels with 20" CX-9 wheels or 20" RX-8 wheels. I was told that the wheels would fit, but the stem computer sensors would be disabled, negating the warranty. (It sounded like they just didn't want to do it). If it works, consider the RX-8 wheels; they're much cooler.

My only concern would be how much more those weigh over the stockers...
