Well I just passed the break in period and my problem has arisen. My engine light came on this morning. I've looked at the manual and talked to a couple of people, all suggest checking the gas cap. I'm 1/2 into this tank of gas, but I guess the seal could begin to leak at any time. I'm going to give that a try but I'm not confident that is the problem. Anybody else had a problem with the engine light?:o

I'm almost at 800 miles and no engine light yet. take to the dealer and they can tell you what it is.
with all the stringent emission laws now, the engine light is very senstive to trip.

I have 1800 miles on my cx7. And for the second time in the middle of a tank of gas I will be taking it back to the dealer! I will let you know what they do/say about the problem. Alan

I guess cars are more sensitive these days. So it was a loose gas cap (don't talk to the husband while he's pumping the gas :D ). It took 3 days and about 200 miles of driving before it went out. But that is normal as far as the dealer says. With all the electronics, the car does a thorough testing before the light goes out.

I just hit 600 miles with less than a quarter tank and the check engine light came on...
I know its not the Gas cap because I read this post before I got my cx-7, so Ive always made sure the gas cap is on tight after every fill up. Ill call the dealer today and post the results.

I have had my engine light come on twice for the gas cap
I know I have put it on tight both times but after the light comes on
and I check it, it has become loose
the first time I took it in at 2500km and that was the problem
the second time I let the engine light go out on it's own after a couple days

My CX-7 just came from the dealer's service department today after the Check Engine Light came on at 9,060 miles. Their comment: It is a know problem witht the gas cap, and its only repair it to have the cap replaced. That's the good news. The bad news is that it took them almost three weeks to receive the part after it was ordered.
My suggestion: as the car is under warranty - take it to the dealer and have them check the diagnostic code, confirm that its the gas cap, and wait for the dealer to get the part. The driveability of the car is not affected by the C.E.L.
Good luck!
Yeah, this gas cap issue is a common problem across all new cars. I did months and months of research before getting the CX-7 -- a lot of which involved browsing forums like these -- and there was almost always threads complaining about it. Stupid regulations.
Anyhow, I'm certain that doesn't help your problem, but it might make you feel better knowing you'd probably be inconvenienced by it regardless of what new car you bought. :)

Happened to me too. I'm real careful with the cap now and haven't had any more problems. 2400 miles on odometer.

the dealerships are ordering replacement gas caps to keep in stock... once my cap was changed the problem disappeared.

Yes C.E.L light came on after two weeks, took it to the dealer, he replaced the gas cap and it is back to normal.
I am wondering if we all know about this gas cap issue, why doesn't Mazda inform all dealers to replace the gas cap before they sell it? Or atleast write to new owners about this issue?
I just realized CD track info. is not displayed on the Navigation screen (after you press the 'Sound' button)
Does anyone have this problem?

My engine light came on at 300 miles!
The dealer immediately ordered a new gas cap.
It took 2 weeks to come in.
The problem hasn't returned since.

 ok i got my engine light at 190 miles on my odometer, that is 2 days after the delivery of my CX-7. Returned to the dealer for warranty service, to include the wheel vibration im getting at 70+ mph. To cut the the story short, Codes pulled = PO455 "gross evaporative leak due to gas cap defect". They replaced it with the new updated gas cap, rebalance both front wheels.
The result: "Lights Out" and now drives "Smooth" as it should be for something new. Hope it stays out. :o

Beside from my wife scratching my brand new CX7 the first night we drove it out of the lot. This car is a beauty... The engine light it is a well known issue in the dealers. they would replace the cap for free since is a manufacture issue. plus is cover under the factory guarantee; it is nothing to worry about it unless there is smoke coming out of your engine.

My 2004 Mazda6 had the same issue. I am assuming the CX7 has the same gas cap the Mazda6. In any case, I went for a state inspection and the car failed. $4 later I had a new gas cap from AutoZone, and a new state inspection sticker. That's when the check engine light came on. The dealer replaced the gas cap under warranty and flashed the codes. Good as new. Hope my wife's new CX7 doesn't have the same issue.

tons of posts on the same problem, I got my CEL on 150 miles got a new cap dealer had installed 10 min in stock. No further problems, 1st year issue supplier design issue I should ad. If this is the only issue I will be more than happy had my Mitsubishi in every month for something.
The gas cap is a pretty common problem with the CX-7. Mazda has issued a service bulletin to all of its dealerships so they should all be aware of the problem. Had mine replaced after 750 miles, CEL went out, no problems since.:D

400 miles and the check engine light came on today. :) Same thing happened w/the Mazda6 we traded in. I called Mazda and they said it was the gas cap. I am going in next week to have it replaced and have the codes flushed. Must be a Friday part, time for a TSB on this one Mazda. ;)
how does the gas cap effect the engine light to come on? does it not make contact with the sencor?

It sticks, take it to the dealer and they should be able to tell you if you need a new one, and if you don't tighten it enough or you have a bad gas cap the CEL will turn on because it just does.
