Hi

Considering that our steering wheel is straight from the MX-5, where the model with automatic gearbox has paddles for up and down shift on the steering wheel; does anyone know if this means we can somehow hook up these paddles to the CX-7 as well?

Cheers

I am not sure, I have not seen it done yet. Wanna be the first and try it out?

I wouldn't think so. You're talking about signficant engineering changes to the vehicle. That's like trying to transform an apple into an orange.

Anything is possible though. We are not changing it to a manual transmission or puttingint he CX-9 V6. It is just going tobe a lot of work, and might not be the best money invested. If there is time and desire, and $ to do it, it is possible.

while with enough time and money it is possible.

It is not simple as simple as bolting on paddles to your wheel.

what I really like about the paddles on the miata is the silver around the radio and cruise controls on the wheel were ours is just black.

I actually installed paddle shifts in my one month old cx-7. Because the transmission was flapstick, its electronically controlled. Open the center console, wire the switch with 8 gauge wire or less. Pin it in the driver's fuse box, and wire however you want to. In mine, i opened the steering wheel(my bag exploded ouch!) and just wired it through two holes in the back of the wheel. I attached it to two spring flaps i bought on ebay, it took me a week and only 35 dollars. The only prob is you still have to change from auto to manual with the stick, otherwise its great.

you are lucky that bag didn't kill you.

yeah i would think that once you have the hardware, it wouldnt be more than mounting and running 2 wires to the new paddles for any tiptronic shiftronic manumatic that is already setup for the car.

need pics though, this is BIG for your first post iman. (click on go advanced when replying and its pretty easy.)

How much did it cost to reload your airbag after your did this?

Is it always in manual mode?

If so, how does the stock shifter engage/disengage this feature?

Pictures please...

Iman could you post instructions, maybe the wires and the part numbers for the paddle shifters.

I looked at doing this myself once. Found the two holes in the steering wheel, and then thought about blowing the airbag. - Stopped there.

Also wasn't sure if I wanted the shifters to move with the wheel or stay stationary like the RDX

I do believe iman has done this mod, but glowing over the $35 cost, and not mentioning the airbag cost, sounds odd.

BTW does the airbag deactivate if you disconnect the battery or is there residual capacitor charge that needs to be considered?

Well, the guy came onto the forum, posted, then disappeared. I am going to go grab my bull **** flag out of my closet and will waive it like Braveheart until the guy proves it was done.

x2...

I can't even find a set of flipper assemblies to use, let alone get to mounting and all that.

Well, some of what iman posted was plausible, and other vehicles have been modified

It probably would work when you find the right wires at the gearshift, route them to the steering wheel, and find some suitable shifters.

Once you're driving an electronic shifter, it can pretty much be put anywhere and operated with just about anything - now making it look nice would be the difficult part

That company made trim pieces and everything to make it look right. Nicely done, I would have hoped for prettier paddles, but what can I do...
