I finished installing my hitch and I made a few observations on the stock exhaust. I had to completely remove the muffler to install my hitch. For kicks I revved the engine sans muffler. It was not any louder than my Mitsubishi Evo with a performance turboback exhaust + high flow cat. So any performance muffler on the CX-7 will be very mellow assuming that it is an axleback system. I suspect any exhaust system will have to be an axleback since the midpipe incorporates the main cat + a pre-muffler in one long welded piece. Of course a racing midpipe could be made with a high flow cat. There is also a precat in the downpipe as well. A performance DP that eliminates this precat would free up backpressure and really let the turbo spool. So there is plenty of potential here for the aftermarket. Personally I would like to see a downpipe and an axleback muffler leaving the stock midpipe in place. This would be a good compromise in exhaust flow and sound level since I do not want my CX-7 to have race level exhaust decibels.
