A lot of this info is directly comparable to the CX7 motor. I would skip all the forum bickering and just focus on the 1st thread by AMS (big time Evo tuner shop in Chicago). The only thing that the AMS tuner is not up to date on is intakes. Intakes are making 20+ whp on MS 3's (just like CX7's). Based on my seat of the pants impression, I think the ECU is also restricting throttle opening in 1st gear on the CX7. Unless you manual shift, the ECU short shifts 1st big time. Even then, the ECU is obviously restricting boost in 1st gear. 2nd gear is where max boost kicks in. If the ECU could be re-tuned to not limit 1st gear, 0-60 times in the 6's (maybe low 6's) would be possible with minimal mods. Zoom-zoom.

Turn off the TCS and it won't reduce boost as much.

If you turn off the TCS it does go better
but it turns itself back on again... Is that normal?

TCS automatically switches back on at 18 mph.

Yes it turns itself back on, but it helps the launch to have it off. At least it feels that way by my seat-o-the-pants gauge.

That's a sad thing to me however, that Mazda doesn't trust its owners enough to allow them to turn the TCS off completely when the occasion seems right. :( The better automobiles on this planet allow that possibility, ie Porsche, BMW, Audi, etc...and it's one of the main reasons that CX-7 skidpad performance is so lousy...that TCS system keeps "intervening" between the driver and any attempt at fast traversing.
There's literally no way to take a CX-7 out and drive it to its limit(s), and really enjoy the SUV, without the TCS and rollover protection systems getting between the driver and the experience of driving fast. Too bad...I'd like things to be different so my CX-7 experience would be all mine, not a bunch of electronics getting in the way.;)
Kindest regards,

I read an article about how Mazda got around torque-steer on their cars.
Most fwd cars with 240hp would be a bear to launch and keep in a straight line. Apparently Mazda's software "limits torque" in first gear, if it detects any steering angle other than straight.
I'm curious if that software is different for awd models.
they do a great job of suppressing torque steer. read a review of any fwd car with decent power (Acura TL comes to mind, also Nissan Sentra Type R) and I'm sure they'll mention torque steer.
